The much-maligned Brussels sprout has been given a new lease of life this festive season – as a battery to light a Christmas tree.
A team of scientists and engineers from ‘The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair’ have created the world’s first ‘sprout battery’ to showcase in a fun way to young kids the rewarding opportunities that exist in the world of work if they have the right experience and qualifications. The battery uses five power cells, each holding 200 sprouts, which together are able to produce 63 volts – enough to power an eight-foot Christmas tree, which has gone on display in London’s Southbank this week.
